Am a tad rusty here so would appreciate if you could help me out !!

Was just wondering about the following

drwxr-xr-x 7 root other 2560 Oct 10 10:10 bin

Does this mean that the owner (root) has full permissions and the group "other" has read and execute and all others have read and execute as well ?

Cheers,

This is for a directory, so all it controls is the permissions to browse the directory, not the perms for files in it.

In directory mode, +r would be able to read it and +x can "cd to it".
