I have recently been getting involved in accessing the Cisco routers on our network for monitoring purposes. My question is that whenever we needed changes made to a router we had an outside tech make them. One time when he was at my place of work I watched him making changes. He did his changes by telneting to the router and it looked like he used a cut and paste technique to put the router config into Windows/Notepad. Then he would make the changes in Notepad and do a cut and paste to put it back on the router. I would appreciate if someone could help me with this procedure and explain in detail the technique used to accomplish it. I can cut and paste into Notepad, but I am not sure about how to put the changes I make back onto the router. Are there any router commands involved aside from the cut and paste?

Copy run start to make it go into the startup config. Matt Wray

Do I copy the contents of what I have in Notepad and then go back to the router prompt and do the copy run start command?

You'll need to be in global config to paste the config in!

collossus#conf t
Enter configuration commands, one per line. End with CNTL/Z.
collossus(config)# <paste config here>

It will then paste each line in. When it has stopped, hit <enter> and do a copy run start.

Chris.

Right, you must be in global config. What I do in this case is type sh run copy it to a notepad. Given a change is needed are I'm just copying it to another Router what you do is pull up the saved file copy the interfaces, routing protocols line con 0 (whatever) enter the router copy and paste in global Jeter@LasVegas.com
