I am looking to configure the ISA server as a basic proxy server prior to our firewall (CP fw1) its only required function is to log what user is going where (user info taken from win 2k AD)

if someone can give me some basic pointers i.e what type of install and some basic config.
i am not looking for a step by step guide (but if you know of one it would be usesful as i am a complete newbee to isa server)

The first thing I suggest is to buy a book. Next, if all you are doing is monitoring, then a box with a single NIC will work fine. Install ISA server in caching mode only. Set up the content/protocol rules so that only users from a specified global group have access. If for example you want everyone to have access, you could add the group domain users to the content and protocol rules. Otherwise, you should create a global group and add the users that need to have access to the internet. The reason for locking down ISA by userneame like this is because if you do not, the log files will always show anonymous as the user, and the IP address of the client. But by requireing group access like I described above, ISA will log the user names of the people access the internet.
