This may sound rather basic but it has been bugging me for some time. Why are network interface cards or devices within Solaris called different names. For example hme0, qfe0 and ce0. Why are they all not just called hme0 for example. I sure that there is an easy answer but it mystifies me.

Hi,
All the hardwares are different and than the names are different.

Please check
man hme
man qfe
man ce
man eri

Many thanks. I did not think that there would be man pages on thoes. Cheers.

the names of the interfaces are driver names; depending on the hardware & bustype (sbus, pci) single NIC or Quad Cards

Best Regards, Franz
