Basic LDAP queries

I'm a complete newcomer to LDAP and have really struggled to create any queries previously. Can anyone point me in the direction of a good resource to learn more about how to create basic queries because I only seem to be able to find advanced stuff on the Internet.

If it's of any use, it's to configure both MAILsweeper and HEAT from a Win2k AD Domain.
