new to exchange here, i am trying to see if it would be a good option for our small business.
Everyone is on a pop3 account. If i install the pop3 connector can the users get the email from the exchange server when they are in the office and directly from the POP3 server when they are away from the office?
We are basically considering it just so we can share calendars and contacts in a more robust way.
thanks!

You can do what you are planning but in fact there are options which would probably deliver a better alround solution.

For the users who travel they can consider 2 things:

1 - Outlook Web Access if they don't carry laptops etc. You may want to consider a 2 factor authentication system (such as Vasco 2 Factor Auth for OWA - vasco.com) to add some security if you are going to open this up to the web.

2 - For the laptop carrying users use Std Exchange Service in the Mail Profile to connect to the Exchange server and enable offline copies (called Cached Mode in Outlook 2003) to enable them to travel with full functionality. They will be able to connect to the server using dial-up or VPNs and it will Sync their mailbox contents rather than downloading everything to the local machine (removing it from the server).

If you go down this route and want more detail on any of the actual config options just post back here along the way and I (and many others too) will chip in with config help if you need it.
