I have a pix 515r that i am in charge of. I don't know anything about. I'm not even sure which software is on it. Help please.

I do have the password and I can telnet into it.

What are the commands for
1. finding out which software version is on it.

2. finding out the current config.

3. getting into an edit mode to change the config.

thanks,

HI.

1) SHOW VERSION

2) SHOW CONFIG
(This works only in ENABLE mode)

3) ENABLE

Thanks that was helpful! I am studying the PIX right now. I need to start getting some hands on experience but I want to make sure I can back-up everything so I can restore it later.

Could you tell me how to:

1. Export and Save a copy of the current configuration. So I can back-up my work.

2. Import a saved configurations. So I can import what I've exported at replace everything exactly how it was, in case I screw everything up.

HI.

Capture the SHOW CONFIG output to a text file as your backup.

You can later paste this config back to the pix.

You should first verify that you are able to access the PIX through the serial console port. This is important since you might loose the telnet access if you misconfigure the PIX.

In PIX, like CISCO routers, there is the active configuration in memory and the saved configuration for boot up.
So you can make changes to your configuration without saving them, and then if you have problems you simply issue the RELOAD command or cycle power to the PIX and it will load the previous saved configuration.
When you are satisfied with the new config, you should save it with the WRITE MEM command.
