basic calculation help

most of the time NO, but it depends on calcualtion....
and depending on it you can use script step of:
SetField[c_field,"something"]
u can also consider a some sort of Condition that applies to that current record vs. using jsut a calcualtion
so in other words it would be "conditional calcualtion"
eg.
c_field= Case(isEmpty[NameField],"NO NAME",original_calculation_here)
