Hi Everyone,

I have to Dell Servers, mirroring each other. Quick question: what's the best inexpensive way to do good simple backups(WITHOUT TAPE!!!); there is about 4-7 Gb of info on each server. If they require separate backups, it's no big deal.

Thanks,
Trevor Farren,

Create a share on each server
Backup server #1 to the share on server #2
Backup server #2 to the share on server #1

Be sure to exclude the backup file from the backups so the backup doesn't backup the server to the other server. (I hope you understand this line :)

Bill.

It depends on your definition of "backup".
Are you backing up just to backup or is this really in preperation for a restore. I think the latter is more correct. The industry needs to rename this function from backup to restore. After all that is the intent. Yopu don't want added confusion in a disaster recovery situation. You want as much clarity as possible.

Backing up to disk reduces some risk and is quick to restore from once the primary goes away assuming your secondary stsem is intact.

Backing up to disk remotly covers that situation where a site is no longer available. Cost are higher (Comm gear) by risk is reduced.

Backing up to tape means that the data that resides on the tape can be reapplied whereever that tape and it's environment (Operating system, backup / restore software, peripherals and environmentals) can be estalished.

You see, it's the definition of what you want as backup.
