So I've got this barcode scanner, the handheld kind for scanning bunches of barcoded inventory. When I go to upload the data to my computer, I want the user to be able to click on a desktop icon that will: open the transfer program main window, open a fly-down menu within the program, select the correct option from the list, open that window, prompt the user to enter a file name, open another fly-down menu & select yet another option.

What I want to do basically is record a macro that starts when I click on a desktop icon, but I don't have any idea how to go about that, or where to look to find out how to go about it, can someone point me in the right direction? Any help greatly appreciated! I am a little(?) over my head here...

Dell Dimension, Windows XP Pro, Percon Portable File Transfer Version 4.4, Percon PT2000, docked to a serial port

thank you

Well start by making a batch file.
this is done in Notepad and saved as a xxxx.BAT
then you can create a short cut on the desktop to launch it.

You need to know the name of the program such as
xyz.EXE
and any paraamters that my go with it
like so
xyz.exe /la de dah DougP, MCP

ha! I figured it out...I put a shortcut to the application program on my desktop and then modified the command line per instructions given in the......wait for it.....HELP FILE!

Who looks at the help file??? ;-)

Just for fun I am going to see if I can do it the way you've suggested, too. Thanks for the reply, I appreciate it!
