Hello,

I am working with a Metrologic, Orbit model MS7120 wedge scanner.It’s being used to scan membership cards in a fitness club. Recently some new Dell computers were purchased. Unfortunately the new systems do not have PS/2 keyboard and mouse ports, only USB. I called Dell and they are sending a PS/2 to USB converter. The make and model of the converter is a Tripp-lite Model B015-000 adaptor

After searching I seen that someone said he was
using this particular converter.
But will this be enough to allow proper operation of a
scanner on a USB port? If not then what device do you recommend?
Also, which drivers and software do I need to install to ensure correct operation on a USB port? They have three
different types of software for this model.

But I noticed on another page that Metrologic has for
download a USB emulation driver. They show one for both
uni-directional and bi-directional support. Will I need one
of these also for correct operation?

Thank You.

It really doesn't matter whether it's a keyboard wedge or USB scanner (or a wedge scanner running thru a USB converter). The hardware should recognize it as an input device and then treat it just like a keyboard input. I have dozens of Retail customers who use barcode scanners of all different types. Many of my old KB wedge customers have been upgraded to newer USB scanners with no changes ever having to be made to either the hardware (aside from maybe programming the barcode device to match existing application requirements) or the application base it runs on.

Metrologic makes a perfectly functional device and I wouldn't worry about it for now. If the device doesn't work when received, then start looking for solutions. Symbol makes excellent equipment that would be one of several other choices to research.

As for uni-directional or bi-directional, that is reliant on your application and what it does. If all it does is read, then uni should work just fine, but I think most scanners have this capability built in - all you do is configure the device if you have to change it.

Hope this eases your anxiety a little.

Thanks for the reply,
I will be going back later this week to finish the
