hey all,

im running IE6.0 with WXPpro and every web page i open up has a banner across the top of the page. when you hover over the banner it displays the following web address in the status bar

number*

not really knowing where to start, this is what ive done so far:

1) i looked in the registry and found a key called "servedby.advertising.com" so i deleted that

2) deleted & blocked all cookies from that address

everytime i open a web page i get a little "no entry" sign on bottom right-hand corner of status bar. when i double-click it it shows two variations of the web address as being restricted and their cookies blocked.

my homepage is set to google and when i refresh it the banner disappears.

any suggestions anyone?

thanx

ps sorry if its not much info but im not sure what i should be looking for so i dont really know how to explain it

you need to download either "spy-bot" or "Ad-aware" they are both free.

these programs will rid you of spyware that will cuase those issues among others. for now run msconfig and check out your start-up tab.

i got both spy-bot & ad-aware and they cleaned up a lot of guff from my machine...

but unfortunately not the troublesome banners. they're still appearing on each webpage i open

back to the drawing board i suppose

carr,

thanx for that link..

tried it, had to make some minor adjustments -

1) the path i had to use was "windows\system32\drivers\etc
2) i didnt have a "hosts" file - found a "hostsagb" so i used that

however, it still didnt work. i still have random crappy browsers on the top of each page...grrrr

thanx for all the ideas, any other suggestions?

cheers

To back up a bit, are you sure you've cleaned all cookies off your machine? Not just in cookies, but in Temp Internet Files?
Also, it might not hurt to search for the string "servedby" while in regedit and delete any instances of it that you turn up.

carr,

i've deleted all the cookies from every user on the machine. searched the registry for "servedby" stings, found only one & i deleted that on the first post. i also found another nasty - "doubleclick" so i searched & deleted all instances of that.

i d/loaded a registry manager and that cleaned up a lot of rubbish too, but not the banners.

thanx for all the help

you could try searching your entire hard disk for "servedby" - windows will even allow you to search the contents of files for a word or phrase.

This 'thing' is definately well buried, isn't it!

Hi Lunatic
I think i have the answer you are looking for.
I had exactly the same problem as you did for 2 days now

I tried many things like you did but no results.

Heres the solution that worked for me...

Our Problem is a "Brower Helper Object" (more info search the net)its not a virus or trojan or cookie thats why ad ware and pest patro and others dont didect it.
The software you need to find is called BHODemon is freeware very small download i even can mail it to you.

This program will search your registry and point you at the BHOs 2 in my case when that is done search the registry ..
find {87236508jhbfdg7} somthing like that and DELETE themIn my case these registry entries pointed to two dll files iexplorr24.dll and iexplorr23.dll in the windows directory, delete them too
After i've done these no more adds or pop ups :)

If you find this helpfull drop a line!

perkiklis, that is a very good post! we seem to forget (i do anyway) about browser helpers. they work differently than adware/spyware but piss you off just the same. as a matter of fact, i'm out of town right now on a friend's pc in which i think there is one causing me to want to kick a hole in this thing. have you researched for other progs like the one you posted? i would like to try a few out. i also have been thinking to purposely download adware and run a few "tests" of my own just to have a little more knowledge of the crap. as one of the guys here posted last month, there are indeed problems with removing some of those evil spyware progs. something needs to be done above spybot and adaware i just don't know if a have time. anyone have any ideas? carrr? smah?

periklis,

i've never heard of "browser Helper Objects" before, wee nasty things that they are...

but that BHODemon worked a treat, my web pages are now banner-free

you deserve a star for that
