I transferred some files (some? ha! like 6 Gig) to my sever accross a 100Mbps net work. First I scavenged all these files at a LAN party, an entire directory of 6Gigs, and it took about 20 minutes to copy it (between two 2000 boxes). I went to transfer these files to the server (now everything is 100Mb/s) and it started at 101.836Mb/s. About 5 minutes later it plummetted to 139kb/s. It took 11 hours to move that file!

So is there an automatic bandwidth throttle? Cool if there is, I am just curious. Hope I was of some help...

not to my knowledge, but i could be wrong. Alot of that kind of stuff depends on system speed, harddrive speed, and network speed

Network speed is 100BaseT, pretty stable too. I've never had any trouble with any of that stuff.

HDD is 7200 RPM, bus speed is 66MHz (old mobo, but it was free!) 150MHz Pentium (that was free too).

Could it be the slow CPU?

Correction to the above:
When I copied that file from the first 2000 machine to my 2000 machine, the other guy's machine has a 10BaseT card in it. I forgot all about that, but the speed prob I had was between my 2k box and my RedHat box (both of mine are 100Mb/s hubs, routers, cards...all 10/100 auto switching, and everything is running at 100Mb/s) that took 11 hours. No joke! Oh! and the RedHat box is a text only server, if that makes a difference...[noevil] Hope I was of some help...

Umm, just a few things to try out, is your workstation downloading from the linux machine, or is your linux machine uploading to your workstation. You could try moving the files to your html dir in a unique folder and see if, while using apache, you run into the same problems. If you do then you can pretty much point the finger at the CPU(Or at least thats where i would point the finger, could be wrong) but if you d/l faster from apache then you know its your ftp server, i might suggest proftpd, its really nice. Also, if your new to linux, if i may suggest using webmin. Its a web based application to help with the configuration of your server and IMO it has been rather helpful to me. If your workstation is downloading from the linux FTP server, you could try to install a small FTP server on your workstation and see if you notice any difference, for windows i suggest Serv-U which is a breeze to setup. I hope this helps.

Thanks for the info, I'll try the webmin...

..but the 2000 machine was uploading to the Linux box...hehe bass-ackwards, I know, but it had to get there somehow. :) Hope I was of some help...
