Hi,

have a weird question really.
does a phone call consume the same amount of bandwidth whether or not someone is actually speaking.

lets say for instance i make a call to another IP phone but say - would that use less bandwidth.

my opinion/assumption is that it wouldn't, it would use the same amount of bandwidth whether I'm talking or whether there is background noise.

Thanks in advance.

My opinion for what it is worth.

If as you say "background noise" is being transmitted then bandwidth would be consumed, but less bandwidth than transmitting a solid tone. With microphones muted in handsfree mode I would think that bandwidth consumption would be minimal.

Why guess? Setup wireshark or the like to sniff packets and compare different scenarios.

G.711 codec doesn't support VAD, G.729B does, but I think MITEL has G.729A only. So in theory it should generate empty frames even with muted mic.

For G.711 if doesn't matter if it's background noise or solid tone-64kbps payload and 80kbps with overhead. G.729 will have some dispersion but average payload will be 8kbps and 32kbps including all sorts of headers.

Wireshark will give you a real answer.

have done traces. if you look at a wireshark trace, the packets flow like there's no tomorrow. in all scenarios. I'm aware that G729a does not mutes to conserve bandwidth when there's no audio.

I'm yet to be conviced technically that the bandwidth is less if there's no/soft/background audio, hence my post here.

thanks for the views and input anyways..
