Hi
I need some help with the MBR virus :here the exact details of what happened.
1st a mate of mine wanted XP on his Sony VAIO laptop.
Se he removed ME by deleting the partition and was about to reformat when he got a BADMBR error in Ranish Partition manager.
the drive is now unformatable ,no matter what i have tried .
I have Mcafee virus shield and when i use the boot disks of that if stalls when checking the boot sector .
if i use Norton will their Boot discs remove this ?.
As having a laptop with a unformatable drive is bad .
Is there any other way to remove this virus form a Dos enviroment .?
Thx and rgds

fdisk /mbr will overwrite the master boot record. You should then be able to partition the drive and format it.

Thx
feel stupid now never tried that command :)
will try in the morning thx again .

I have not used Ranish Partition manager, but you might want to try removing all partitions, starting the install by booting from the XP CD and then create the partitions during the XP setup.

Not really a usual solution, but try using an OLDER version of FDISK (like version 5.0 in DOS 5.0). This will attempt to replace the MBR with its own and it will overwrite any partition manager-installed MBR.

Hope this helps.
