When i'm using internet explorer and on a site with an ActiveX, a message comes up on the top of the screen saying "Your security settings do not allow Web sites to use ActiveX controls installed on your computer. This page may not display correctly. Click here for options…"
When I go into the help file it says to change the security level, this doesn't work. I think I may have changed some other setting somewhere else ( most possibly 'Administative Tools') by mistake.
I'v reinstaled IE 6 and no luck, and now can't get IE 7 for some reason.
Can anyone help?

Thanks for the link but this still doesn't help as I think it's not the IE settings that are messed up but some other security script!

I have the same problem on a laptop that I just installed XP on Still haven't found what it is. This was and upgrade from win 98 so I'm not sure if that had something to do with it or not.

Sleepsalot,
What IE and XP version are you using?

IE 6.0.2900.2180
XP 5.1.2600 SP2 build 2600

What's the story concerning IE7?

While you have IE6 you can try this repair.

Internet Explorer Fix

Also with IE6 you can try these.

Make sure your options in IE/ Tools/ Internet Options/ Advanced are correct.

Uncheck the boxes for "Install on Demand" for IE and Other programs (two boxes).

Try running temporarily with the third box "Enable Third Party Browser Extensions" unchecked and see how this goes.

"This specifies that you want to disable features you installed for use with Internet Explorer that may have been created by companies other than Microsoft.
If you encounter problems with Internet Explorer that you cannot resolve, you can use this option to help determine if third-party features are causing the problems without uninstalling the feature. You must restart Internet Explorer after turning this option on or off."

What security programs are you running that might be also interfering with ActiveX controls, some firewalls block this.

Have you tried System Restore?

Run the System File Checker program from the Run Box by typing.....Sfc /Scannow in it and have your XP CD handy.

Restoring Functionality to the Downloaded Program Files Folder

The deal with IE7 is this, after downloading, at the end of the installation it says 'Setup could not verify the integrity of the file Update.inf. Make sure the Cypotpgrapgic service is running on this computer', the service is definaltly running.

See if any of these offer a few clues, don't forget the basics like cleaning out Temporary Internet Files folder and other Temp files, disabling Anti Virus and other security type software while installing IE7.

Internet Explorer ActiveX update

I tried every all the links and nothing!! I'm still unable to use ActiveX or install any microsoft update.

You can set it up to auto update and it will get you all the updates. Just have it download but not install so you can select what is installed. I did this after mine wouldn't run active X.
