I have a Quantum 2.1 GB HDD. There are some bad sectors on the HDD. While I am formatting the HDD, I get a message saying trying to recover lost allocation units after about 40% of the formatting is complete.

Is there a way to remove / kill the bad sectors??

If not is there a way to atleast hide the bad sectors???

If it fails to recover, they will be blocked from use. You might also want to run scandisk and surface test to block out any more that it can find. Ed Fair

Sometimes the bad sectors are unrecoverable, other times a format will free the sectors and make them available again. Keep in mind that even though it may appear that the problem is resolved, bad sectors tend to return in the same places on the hard drive.

I recently had this problem on a Maxtor hard drive I purchased just over a year ago - there were 2 bad sectors. After formatting and putting my image back on the hard drive, scandisk, defragmenter, and Norton Utilities examined all sectors and they checked out OK. After just 3 months, one sector returned. A week later, the other one did.

You just have to realize that most of the time a hard drive that starts turning up bad sectors may have a internal read/write problem with one of the heads. Best to seek warranty and get the drive replaced...

I have had very good experiences with SpinRite. At this moment, I am typing on a computer with a C: drive containing many "bad" sectors (at least, that's what every other utility reported). I thought I would have to replace the drive because the first few tracks were "unrecoverable".

NOT....

I have got some bad sectors in my hard drive which i don't know how to remove from hard drive, i have also scanned many times but it (HDD) still contain bad sectors

Real bad sectors don't go away. During the format, or during a scandisk, they will be found bad and marked in the fat as unusable and you'll never be bothered with them again until you reformat.
Partially bad sectors may format OK, may show up good in scandisk, then come back to bite you when you can least afford it.
Proceed with your life. Drive manufacturers used to be happy when they got 90% of them good. Ed Fair
