Where is the system info stored, on the hard drive or the PEC's on the Media card. I want to swap a bad BCM 400 out by putting the Media card and the hard drive on a different BCM 400 so I don't need to get new Key Codes. will this work?

The system serial number is stored on the msc card.
The keycodes are located on the hard drive.
You can move the hard drive and msc to the other cabinet and preserve your keycodes and programming.

Can you do this from a BCM 200 to a BCM 400 ?

or

Can you move License Codes from a 200 to a 400 ?

We want to upgrade from our 200 to a 400 and since we were told that we could NOT move the License Codes to the new system, the only option was to purchase all new codes.

Thanks,

Eduardo

You cannot follow that procedure from a BCM 200 to a 400. BCM 200 uses a MSC-1B, which doesn't have capability for an expansion cabinet or more than two media bay modules.

Only way keycodes can be "regenerated" to another system ID is in the event of MSC card failure.

That being said, it's foolish that Nortel doesn't have an upgrade path to go from the BCM 200 to 400 - almost like they don't want their customers to grow. I've had a couple customers run into this situation - not fun.

Thanks for the reply.

That is what is odd with the entire setup. We can't use an expansion cabinet, we can't upgrade without scraping the current system; sure I can still use the sets and the two cards, but still. Arguably our biggest investment is in License codes.

I have moved Keycodes from 6 BCM's to other BCM's with no problems, I just call my vendor and give them the ID's and Keycodes of the machines I want to swap.

Are they the same platform (such as BCM 1000 to BCM 1000)?

The way it's "supposed" to work, or as Nortel threatens us, is that if keycodes are regenerated without an open ITAS case, and if defective hardware isn't returned to Nortel, then the company that regenerated they keycodes gets billed for full list price of the keycodes.

Not sure if it's really enforced, but I haven't wanted to find out.

It doesn't make any difference except for the BCM 50, I have done BCM 1000 to BCM 400. I just give the vendor the Systen ID and Keycode of the system I'm takeing it out of and the System Id of the system I'm putting it in and they generate a new keycode.

Nortel does require the failed unit.
The KRS is used to generate the new keycodes for the new serial number but the old serial number is documented by Nortel Order Management.
If the failed unit is not returned within 30 days the company registered to the user that regenerated the keycodes is billed for the new keys.

Keycode regeneration is only an option for failed hardware.Or hardware affected by product bulletins.

I would have to agree with biv343 Nortel will not issue at no charge new keycodes to upgrade from BCM200 to BCM400.
This would not be considered a product defect or a repair issue.

Now just because the 1B MSC card will not support an expansion cabinet doesn't mean that it won't possibly support 4 media bay modules in a BCM400 chassis.

If I were stuck and only needed support for 4 mbm's I would attempt to move the MSC and the hard drive into a BCM400 chassis. No harm should come to anything except your warranty.

Since our goal is to be able to add another PRI card, we just need to have a place to put it, thus the need for a bigger cabinet.

So you are saying, get a BCM 400 Cabinet, move all the components currently on the 200 to it and see what happens.

Is it safe to do ? Meaning if it does not work, I can just move things back and all is well.

Has anyone tried this ?

Thanks.

I haven't tried it but it should work and the process should be harmless. You can move the hardware back.
You only need to move the hard drive and MSC card.
I haven't really paid attention to the BCM200 but for this to work the MSC 1B card would have to support 4 DS30 modules like the MSC 1A. In this case you don't need to support the expansion cabinet. You would also need a BCM400 cabinet just kicking around to test.

The MSC 1B only has two connectors for media bay modules, and only 2 PEC slots. I had the same thoughts until I yanked a MSC from a BCM 200.

Sucks, doesn't it??

It really does !!!

Lots of potentially promising avenues leading to dead ends.

Does Norstar suck?
Maybe it should have read does Nortel suck.
lol
You could always replace your BCM and put in a nice 3Com NBX, it's scalable to 30 pri's and up to 1500 telephones and it supports Norstar phones through a 16 port Norstar blade.

I had nice experiences with the NBX in a previous life.

Your comment about being able to support Norstar phones is of interest. We have about 30 Nortel T7316E digital sets, it sounds like we could re-use those, we also have about 30 IP sets, I'm assuming those could not be used.

We were also looking at Shoretel/Shoreline as a possible option. Any thoghts on them ?

Thanks a lot.

3Com Legacy Link Blades support 16 Norstar sets per card.
Each NBX V5000 chassis supports up to 4 of these cards.
You need a $16.00 license per card.
You cannot reuse your Nortel i2xxx phones on the 3Com but the 3Com 3102 and 3103 sets are IP and really nice, especially the 3103. And the new cordless phones are pretty cool too. They sure beat the hell out of T7406 or Engenius phones on a Norstar.
Come 2006 NBX will make a full migration to Linux and become SIP based. You gotta love it.
No thoughts on shoreline.
You can also buy a 24 port Citel SIP handset gateway and plug your Norstar phones into an Asterisk server.
Asterisk is great best part is it's practically free and there are some decent gui's out there.
I really like the NBX though and cant wait until 6.0 S/W is released Q1 2006 $!@#$ Nortel
