Groupwise 5.5 is a great e-mail program. It is so good that once installed, it runs without a peep for ages.

I have a customer installation that has been in place for almost 5 years, in all that time, just had to repair one mailbox database, the user kept trying to do rocket science and got in trouble. Otherwise not a peep out of it.

However, Novell has noticed that Groupwise has eaten up nearly all the space on our SYS Volume. I have had a fun couple of days doing RTFM on Groupwise.

It appears that I can get a lot of space back using the Reduce/Expire and some other maintenance functions.

One bit of information that doesn't seem to be in the manuals.

In the <PO> \WPCSOUT\PROBLEM Directory, there are hundreds of files with a .BAD extension. I assume they are undeliverable messages, or otherwise damaged. Most of them seem to have appeared on 2 dates, both over a year ago, when Groupwise must have had a really bad day. The only information I find is - "Normally, these messages are sent to the administrator for the domain as attachments". Well, smart guys that we are, no one was appointed as the Domain administrator, so there they sit.

Since NDIR shows me this is over 600 megs of junk, my question is, can I just delete these files? Will Groupwise notice that they are gone and roll over and die? I can find no function in the Maintenance that looks like it will clear this stuff out.

One reference mentions "dropping the messages back into the transfer que, and the system will process them again", but no more specific information is given. Dropping 600 megs into a transfer que seems like a really bad idea to me, anyway.

Any ideas on how to reclaim this space would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Paul Ray

Messages are placed in that directory when the agent can not process them for one reason or another. Usually it is some sort of system problem or message corruption. Generally, placing them back in the processing queue is a complete waste of time.

You can safely delete all the items in the PROBLEM directory without any ill effects on the GW system.
