bad media?

I'm new to Backup Exec and DLT's... I am trying to read info, but when I try to access the tape, it has no label and comes up with "bad media". I read in the help file that if I label the tape it will erase all data. That's not what I want! I do not get the option to inventory or catalog the tape. What can I do so that I can read what is on the tape?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

See if that media can be read by the backup software included with Windows... It may actually be bad media.
