In my Devices tab under Standalone Drives, I click on a drive and notice in the Cartridge Lable column the message says <BAD MEDIA> not the normal Cartridge Lable name.

Using Backup Exec 8.0 Rev 3311 OS is NT sp6

The drive in question [Digital TZ88N] just replaced a [Digital TZ87N] drive that quit working.

I believe I did the replacement correctly.

My question is what exactly does <BAD MEDIA> indicate?
Is my replacement drive also bad or have I failed to set it up correctly?

Are there tape drive diagnostic utilities I could be using?

Any help appreciated

I had one tape that was working correctly suddenly show up as "bad media" as well. I read in a Veritas technote to try erasing the tape. I did a quick erase, and the tape is back to normal. Maybe you should try it.

Bad Media indicates a presumed problem with a tape not with a tape drive.

As packdragon posted, the normal solution is to erase the bad media tape. I usually suggest using the Label Media option as that also does an erase.

Thanks to Both...worked just fine!...very happy.

BTW do you happen to know where one might find firmware upgrades to these tired old [Digital TZ88N] drives?
