bad cache controller or bad ram?

i just bought a asus p4b266 motherboard and mushkin 256mb pc2100 ddr ram. i kept getting errors trying to install windows so i finally figured out that i could turn off the cpu level 1 and level 2 cache in the bios to solve the problem. it worked, and microsofts knowledge base said that if turning off the cache fixes the problem then my mother board has a bad cache controller and needs to be replaced. but i also heard form some people that it could be the ram that is bad. which is correct and if it could be either 1, how can i tell exactly which 1 it is so i only have to go thru the hassel of replacing one of them?

i just had a thought, maybe its something that i've setup wrong. this is my first time building a comptuer from the ground up, but i have looked over the book sevveral times and checked all connections and checked the bios settings. I'm out of ideas.

Do you have another PC you can put the memory in to check and see if everything boots and runs ok? That is the easiest way.

no, my other pc runs on pc100 ram, i sent the motherboard back and they're replacing it, so i guess we'll find out when that comes.
