We have a customer that the backup started failing
because it couldn't backup the exchange information
store, it turns out that they have a bad block on the
hard disk just where the exchange information store is,
we are currently getting event id 7 (bad block) in the
system log and event id 200 (exchange database
corruption) in the application log.

We are a bit loathed to low level format server and
reload for one bad block. We have tried running
chkdsk /f /r which moved a file (no name just number) and
then when run a second time it was clean. We also ran
scandisk with all options ticked.

We can obviously run eseutil to repair the exchange
information store but if its actually sat on bad block
then it is just going to get corrupt again.

Any suggestions?

Regards
Debbie

Update

Have managed to sort the bad block by running chkdsk numerous times etc.

Now getting event id 11, source disk, description - the drive detected a controller error on \device\harddisk0\partion1 (and sometimes partition 2).

Any ideas would be gratefully received.

What's your hardware configuration? RAID controller? firmware? driver? Could be just a software problem, due to mix-matched firmware and driver, could be bad stripes, could be solar flares...a little information may rule some of these out :)

Thanks for reply

Have managed to sort late yesterday, appears to be a disk problem, replaced disk and rebuilt etc. all seems to be ok.

Had already tried controller, cable etc.

Had to run a number of repairs on data etc.

Once again thanks.

Sounds like you went the long (and expensive) route. Glad it's up & running.
