backwe~1.exe missing a "-" separator id?

When I start my computer an error occurs and states the backwe~1.exe is missing a separator id? Not sure how to fix or remove this from occurring? Also I cannot enter the internet or receive email. My internet service is RoadRunner and Outlook Express is my email service.

I doubt if either of these things are related to a virus, but once you get online you can run any of these online virus scans faq760-3862.

Try this tool to repair your winsock service

I suspect that will get you back online.

The backwe~1.exe application is probably backweb which is a background internet updating application. It comes with most Compaq computers and can be installed by other applications that are designed to automatically update over the internet. If you have any applications that are supposed to update themselves automatically, you might want to look into reinstalling it.

Spybot is usually pretty good at getting rid of backweb, tho if you do it, you may break a license agreement.
