backupsets

Hi all,
we performing Backupsets, i know it takes long time to complete. but when i see in the q process, i am not seeing any progress.
can you tell the concept of backupset and how to check the status of the backupsets.
i think my backupset is running from past three days, i dont know is it working or got struck.
is this the best procedure that killing the process and issuing the generate backupset commmand again.
