I just installed a tape backup and I need to set this up as a backup device within SQL Server and set it up to backup every night.

Any special "gotchas" to this, or is it as simple as it seems?

It should be pretty simple as long as the Tape device is installed on the Server running the SQL Server service.

Many of us prefer to use SQL Server native backup to backup to disk and then use enterprise backup software to copy the SQL Server backup files to tape rather than backing up SQL Server databases directly to tape.

If you want to get the best answer for your question read faq183-874 and faq183-3179.
