I have just recently taken over the administration of a Sun E250 server with a L9 storedge tape drive running Solaris 8.
I am investigating various commercial backup software solutions which include Legato Networker, Veritas NetBackup and Solstice Backup.
Can anyone make any suggestions/recommendations or even comment on the above products.
For the moment I am using ufsdump, but would like a reliable, high performance solution, with the scalability necessary to protect the environment. Does such a product exist?
All suggestions greatly appreciated!

First I like Legato's Networker, second it is focused on the clients file systems and gettting them backed up. It takes a hurdle to administer if you are fixated on the tapes, to legato the tapes are just a means to the end

It makes a fine schedulded automated backup system. I tried to remain child-like, all I acheived was childish.

I will prefer use Veritas Netbackup.Because Veritas is The Sun Microsystem patner. And Veritas provide a lot the product for Sun Microsystem.
Or you can use Amanda (open source software) for backup. But you need to check the tape backup device list from Amanda. The Amanda can support L9 Storedge tape backup or not.

I have used Veritas Netbackup some time back and found it to be pretty easy and robust software to perform. It performs backup for quite a few client machines in ur network.. BAckup scheduling and policy creation / mngt is pretty easy here.. And all the things could be done with very intuitive GUI and command line as well!

Plus, its product of Sun Microsystems partner and so have tighter integration with the OS.

Thanks guys for your comments. Was the decision to use these products a personal choice or was it a managerial decision which you have come to accept?
