Here's a weird one for you...

After quite some time, I've finally got Backup Exec tamed and almost working perfectly (the secret is to keep the setup as simple as possible...)

Every single backup has succeeded for months now, I'm getting almost a gig a minute to LTO 2 tape, and everything looks rosey aside from one minor issue.

About once every week or two my backups take 7 hours longer than normal. I have them scheduled to kick off at 20:00 each evening, but these weird ones hang until 3:00 AM the following day, then run perfectly. There's no consistency here in terms of which day it happens on - it could be a Monday one time, then a Thursday the next.

Any ideas???

7 hours longer to start or 7 hours longer to complete?

Also what BE verison is this?

Have you looked at the logs to see what it is actually doing?

Version 9.1, fully SP'ed and patched up. It's a dedicated backup server too, so there's no major data handling jobs happening on it.

I've already "been there, done that" with the whole backups and anti-virus thing - there's no scan jobs running at the same time (unless I have a rogue network admin kicking them off without telling anyone). Anyway, the first item in the resource list is a DC, with only 1.8 GB of data to backup - hardly something that would cause a 7 hour hang.

Been in the logs too. It basically does absolutely nothing for the 7 hours, then kicks in. The start time is still logged correctly, but the first item in the resource list (the DC) doesn't kick in until 3:00 AM.

So it's like:

Job summary information
Original start time : 23 December 2005 20:00:00
Job started : 28 December 2005 20:00:04
Job ended : 29 December 2005 13:48:32

Set detail information (first item)
Start time : 29 December 2005 03:01:30
End time : 29 December 2005 03:06:01

With everything else following in sequence.

Been in the Windows logs too, there's nothing happening on these nights that doesn't happen every night. Likewise with the DC that's being backed up first.

We could be having a very similar issue. Our backups occationally take 7 ish hours longer. Dont know what time they start. Where do you find these logs?
