Backups aren't created in their sub-directory

I have several database backups. All backups are set to be created in their respective sub-directory. For what ever reason, the backup is not created in the sub-directory, instead it is created in the parent directory. This appears to be totally random, sometimes it will work and other times it does not.

Here is the error message from the log file:

Could not create a sub directory for database CCConfiguration. The parent directory will be used instead.[13] Database CCConfiguration: Transaction Log Backup...
Destination: [d:\sql data\MSSQL\BACKUP\CCConfiguration_tlog_200310071921.TRN]

Have you tried manually creating the sub directorys to see if it uses them? it may be that you just have to add an additional step when you make a new database.

Yes I tried that. The odd thing is that it is random. The backup will work correctly, and then one day it will just create in the parent and then the next day it is back working right.

I have noticed that when it occurs, it usually happens with all of my databases. For example, on 10/7, all .trn files were created in the parent, and then the next hour they went back to their respective sub-directories.

does your system do any backups to tape or online storage around then? we had problems doing our backups when our backup program was actively in use.

I will check with our Server Admin, he might be running tape jobs. I will also note the times to get a better handle of when this problem occurs to see if there is a pattern.
