BackupExec for NetWare 8.5 and 9
Netware 5.X

Symptom:
The Backup Exec for NetWare Job History reports the error "The program cannot scan for trustees."

Exact Error Message:
Novell SMS errors were encountered Begin Novell SMS errors: The program cannot scan for trustees. End Novell SMS errors

We have frequently experienced this problem in several offices. This error is cosmetic in nature. The files, which report this problem, are backed up and are restorable. However it is unnerving to our users to see this error.

Cause:
Changes to NDS Objects can cause the error.

Solution:
FINALLY there is information available both at the Veritas Site and on the Novell Site. Please check the technical notes listed below (basically run NetWare DSREPAIR to resolve this problem):

This happens to me about in about 20% of the B.E. installs I've done. Just running dsrepair and choosing the check trustees option has fixed it every time. Good post about a common problem.
