Hello Everyone!
Has anyone experienced or know anything about the following symptom -- On the average of once a month, your BackupExec just stop. It gives you a Dr. Watson error from bengine.exe on the screen, and the following Application Event Log:

EventID: 32770
Source: Backup Exec
User: N/A
Type: Error
Computer: SERVER_BDC01
Category: None
Description:
A service specific error has occurred.
Adamm Service Error: The bengine service has stopped without properly closing the session! - Job="Backup Friday", Changer="HP 4 (SERVER_BDC01)", Slot=2, Drive="HP 1 (SERVER_BDC01)", Media="4M000049"

The crappy solution I have for it now is to start up the BackupExec Job Engine on that system, and everything start running again. The particular instance of the job that the failure occurred on has no status in the "Job Monitor" tab, nor is the next occurance of this job scheduled. This problem has occured on jobs scheduled on the HP autochanger or the stand alone unit. Any info or pointers you have will be much appreciated. Thank you!

System Info:
Pentium II 233
256 Meg ram
NT 4.0, SP6a
one HP 6x40 DAT auto changer
one HP 1x40 DAT auto changer (on the same SCSI channel as the above unit)
Backup Exec 7.3 small business server edition. built 2575.

Dr. Watson error from bengine.exe on the screen.
Please let me know the answer to this problem!
it started this week on my server also.
Backup Exec 7.3 built 2575.

1. Copy your Data folder, Catalog folder, and PVL.MDB to a secure location (located in c:\program files\veritas\backup exec\nt)
2. In BENT, go to Help->About and copy down the license keys
2. Uninstall BENT (Backup Exec)
3. Reapply Service Pack (Service Pack 6a available from Support.Microsoft.com)
4. Reapply MDAC 2.5 SP2 (Available from support.microsoft.com)
5. Install BENT
6. Stop services after reboot
7. Copy the information from Step one back to their original locations
8. Restart the services and test

I too am having this issue, but do not receive the information in event viewer, as mentioned. We do get the dr watson error however, and it behaves as mentioned previously.

We are running version 7.1 with mdac 2.1.2, nt server 4.0, sevice pack 6a. Would you still proceed as indicated?

Ours is an 8 tape autoloader, and seems to error out after importing a new set of tapes on the daily backup.

Thanks!

Hello All,
I tried The resinstall as suggested by Damonster. However, it is still about the same after more than two months of "trial". It Dr. Watson within the first week. I thought it was a fluke. I restarted it and left it alone. Ran for three weeks without a problem, and Dr. Watson again. I still can't nail down a pattern to the occurances. Thanks, Damonster, for your suggestion.

When you say "...after more than two months of "trial"" are you using a TRIAL Version of Backup Exec? If so, it's only good for a short-time (I think it's 90 days).

Have you checked with your network and/or system admin? It could be that the network/sys admin is running some job once (or more) a month that is stopping services. For example:
are you on a cluster? Is the network/sys admin failing the cluster over once a month?

Are you on a network and not on the actual server/workstation that you are backing up? Is the network/sys admin taking the network/etc off-line for any maintenance?

These are the types of things I would check if you haven't already.
