I need to back-up the following files what would be the best way to do this within a script.

-- Control files

If they are in the same volume group, use "savevg". If not, try "tar".

Doesn't the Oracle Database have to be down....? since the redo logs and the ctrl files are time stamped...and if you you don't maintain the datestamps across all of them,
you cannot restore?

Some use mirroring and break the mirror and back it up, some use the Oracle backup facilities. Some do exports of the system.

If your database is down, and it is the same volume group, yes, you can do savevg...
or any of the backups...The key is if the database is down, I think

 
The database does indede need to be down, unless you flag Oracle that a "Hot" backup is running.
