Backup without compression

Hello,

we have always problems to backup disks which are only filled with highly compressed files (e.g. zip files or disk images).
When we are monitoring the backup, we can determine misfires in the stream writing to the tapedrive.
The backup aborted with the error "aborted due to inactivity" often.
All other drives of the server could be backuped without problems. So it could be no general problem with the server.

We assume that the tape drive or the Networker has a problem with the second compression of the already compressed files.

Knows anybody a possibility to backup the files with Legato without a second compression through the networker or the tape drive?

So we could test if this is the real problem or not.

Thanks in advance.

You know that you can have compression at the tape level (can you disable it, and see what happend)
or at logical level (remove the Networker -C option : you will reduce CPU usage, and the risks of time-out)

It's never a good idea to have a double compression (in your case it can be triple: disk, Networker, and tape...)

We are using the "NT standard directive" for the backups.
The alternative is "NT standard with compression directives", is this the "Networker -C option" which you are mean? in other case I don´t know where I should look for this option.

How should I disable the compression at tape level, it seems that this will also steered by the networker through the communication between the networker and our Libary.

For information: We are using the Networker 6.12 on W2K.

You are true, if you use "NT standard directive" there is no compression at Networker level (unless you modified the directive with +compressasm...)
(The -C option is for nsrsqlsv, I made a mistake.)

Disable hardware compression depends on the tape you use (driver parameter?)
But the error "abort due to inactivity" can be a Network issue; try to increase the "inactivity timeout" on the group.
