I am running the free WSS 2.0.

How do I make sure it is backed up properly? We use Veritas 10. What directories do I include to make sure I can restore in an emergency?

Thanks

Hello,

You should backup th3e SQL databases, the IIS with the metadirectory. And also to be able to restore a wss site you should use the built-in tool stsadm to create site backups. With the tools that come with WSS you are not able to do ite-level backup and restore, i.e. if a user deletes one single document you will have to restore the complete site.

How to use the stsadm tool for backup and restore is explained in the Windows SharePoint Services Administrator Guide which you can get from the Microsoft website (I think it is still available).

To be able to get item-level backup and restore fucntionalityu you will have to go with a 3rd party product.

Cheers,
Thomas

As a related question, I am using Frontpage 2003 to back up my site collection. Is that enough or should I be using stsadm instead?

I'm currenly backing up the SQL databases as well via Enterprise Manager.

Well, I have not used the backup through Frontpage myself, I have always been using stsadm and scheduled it to take backups every night.

Cheers,
Thomas
