Netbackup 4.5 - using RMAN to backup up a 500gb oracle database. Took about 20 tape-drive-hours to backup, spread across 2 devices. But only 10 tape-drive-hours to restore. I would have expected the restore to take longer. What is your experience with large restores, do they take longer than the backup ?

Thats one of the 'how long is a bit of string' questions. So much is dependant on your enviroment and the way the backups are configured. Few things to remember, disks are slow, tapes are fast. When reading from disk the head has to jump around to locate the data to read. But when restoring it can start at block 1 and just write and write. It may sound mad but it might be worth experimenting with one tape drive to see what speed you get for the backup.
