Backup using the exchange Agent

I have recently joined a company who are not only backing up the exchage directories at the file level but are also using the exchange agent to back up the directory, the system state, the information store AND the individual mailboxes. My question is do I have to do all these or can I get away with just backing up the directory, the system state and the mailboxes?
