Backup to span CD and DVD

I would like to backup to a CD-R and have the software prompt me to incert a second (or third) CD-R.

With what versions of the backup software is that possible?

Is spanning a feature of (1) the operating system or (2) the backup software the (3)cd driver or the (4)cd burner software?

I support a lot of different operating systems in a lot of different enterprises and I was wondering when can I consider backup to CD or DVD?
