BACKUP TO IDE HD? COMMENTS....TIPS?

Hi Backu Guru's,
Because my clients are all small offices and most can not
afford tape backup systems, the only solution I can think of is backing up to an additional HD. The data to BU would be around 4 to 8 GB. I have had many experiances with HD failure (even new drives only a couple weeks old).
Has anyone had bad experiances with this route and what other solutions do you think would work?
All comments and suggestions would be highly appreciated.

I use Powerquest's V2i protector and I back up to a 120GB drive in an ION USB 2.0 enclosure. I keep the images on the drive, but also include them in my normal tape backup schedule.
