We have many of our customers programmed to backup to an FTP site. Others we cannot backup to it. The IT guys tell me that everything is open. FTP uses port 21. Has anyone had any problems with doing this?
Yes, everything is correct. I always do a backup to the ftp before I take it out of our office to install. I never have a problem. I can take that same system and install it and not be able to complete an ftp backup and the IT guy will tell me he has done everything he can do.
Remember that ftp uses 2 connections: 1st is the control connection which uses port 21. The second is the data connection, which will use a different port (not 21). I believe the 2 devices will negotiate the port.
If the IT guy has only opened up port 21 in the firewall then the ftp will fail.
Nortel's newer releases of VPN router software have an ALG which supports that negotiation for FTP.
Go back to the IT guy and tell him to do his job properly and open up the necessary range of ports or enable an FTP compatible ALG on his firewall.
