Im using Veritas backup exec for sbs 2003.

Im using diferent types of backup methods and backing up to an internal disk. everything seemed to be going fine untill one day the 80gig disk had 0bytes left free, in effect the backup software went "offline" and i get error messages if i try to start a job which names a few casues but i pretty much determined its cause the destination disk is full. but what am i to do to get this thing back "online" and running. I did free up about 200mb of space on the disk and tried to run a very small backup which shouldnt ocupie 200mb of space and the job started then said it has "paused" b/c the thing is offline i guess. im thiking if turning this situation into a 2disk rotation and get removeable trays for the server. but i guess veritas has all my backup information into one file and im using append - overwrite, what can i do? if i have the file on one disk, and then take it out, if i put the 2nd disk in, will it just start writing to that disk? how does this work? i hope ive made myself as clear asi could, im sorry for any unclear statements, but if anyone can offer any help, please repsond, thank you.

(On a side note i do not know how to setup this program to be able to backup my exchange server and individual mailboxes, right now im soley backing up the dedicated drive itself which the exchange server was installed to. i think im stuck at the point where veritas asks for a service account and i dont know what that means or howoto set this up - but if anyone cn offer any help in this area i would greatly appreciate it.)

To backup Exchange, you need to have the Agent for Exchange (it's either an agent or an option). You may have that option with your install disk, but if you didn't pay for a license you won't be able to use it.

How much data are you backing up? Why are you letting it fill up your hard drive? I would have it overwrite after a specified number of days.

1. my company did pay for a license but that was before i started here, and no one seems to know where any of that information is so right now im running of the 60-day eval.

2. i figured out how to make the device to an "online" state.

3. If i had the jobs set to " append - overwrite" why wouldnt they overwrite? or am i selecting the wrong option, i mean how can i rotate one disk and have it so that either it overwrites the media after so many days/weeks/months? or should i just purchase another disk so that i can have disk1 in for like 2weeks, then pop in disk 2 and when disk2 has been active for 2weeks delete media on disk one and then pop in disk 1 for active backup again? so ill have current backups and backups from 2weeks ago? does that sound good to anyone? please give me your advise and any coments. thanks.

For you backup to disk you need to figure out how much data your back runs per day. Lets say you have a 120gb diak. You run a full backup every day and its 20gb.
Lets assume you want to keep a weeks worth of data on disk.
You need to have a M-Thur job to Append/Overwrite and then a Friday job set to overwrite only...I have seen this where the monday job overwrites. You media set should be set to 6 days on the overwrite protection. Since Backup to Disk backups will never overwrite the backup to disk file unless you have at least one job set to overwrite only. Any job set to append/overwrite will keep creating the bkf files. Also, you need to go into tools-option-media management and set it to overwrite Recyled media before scratch. That way when the bkf file expire according to the media set rule they are overwritten.
