I figured out how to tar files onto a DDS3 tape. Now, how do I look at the contents of the tape? Is ther a FAQ or website that describes in detail how to manipulate the tape drive and files on it?

Thanks,
Matt

This was taken from
http: //stage.caldera.com/cgi-bin/ssl_reference?107195

General command line syntax for listing files on a backup:
----------------------------------------------------------
# tar tvf devicename

(1) Example: List all the files on the tape:

# tar tvf /dev/rct0
-Danny

files on tape media are manipulated via many different backup utilities: tar, cpio, pax and others

tape media is manipulated via mt command

tape drives are manipulated via scsi interface

filesystems are backed up with dump command

dd copies to&from raw devices

file command gives sense of file format (eg tape)

manuals are present on FreeBSD website

hope that sheds some light on it
