Hello, we have two DMX1000s that are connected to AIX, Windows and Unisys hosts. EMC implemented them 18 months ago and installed a bin file. Until now we have not needed to make any congig changes. Our environment is growing rapidly now and we need to make many changes. I've been creating devices, forming metas and mapping devices to the front end directors. Currently we do not own the LUN masking feature but will likely purchase that license in the future.

As I make these config changes I am concerned that one day I will make a mistake. If I end up hosing the environment by mistake (maybe deleting or corrupting devices), is there any way I can get the array back to where it was before the mistake? Where is this dmx configuration stored? Is there some kind of restore process?

When you make config changes you are doing the same as EMC would do with a bin file. There is no restore option, as far as I know. If you end up deleting volumes by mistake you will have lost the data anyway, so any 'restore' would be the least of your worries.
There are checks in place to ensure, as far as possible, you don't make drastic mistakes - e.g. you cannot delete a device that is mapped to an FA, so you can be sure that if you are able to delete a device it isn't assigned to a host - of course there is nothing to stop you unmapping or write disabling the device and then deleting it!!
When you get your Lun Masking in place, that is something that can and should be backed up.

It sounds like the bottom line is - be carefull.

As I look further at my hosts (AIX and Windows) they all have the following file /symapi/db/symapi_db.bin. Is this some copy of the bin file that each host keeps?
