We recently install a new Dell 2650 server with Windows 2003 server into our Netware enviroment. I am looking for some software for backing up the windows server. I would like to use some form for DAt drive. I would not be backing more than 10gig. Any recommendations or expirences?

thanks Bob G.

If you are just backing up one server to an attached DAT drive I would say look at the built in Windows backup, I believe it's a cut down version of Veritas and if you use it along with Shadow Copies it will backup open files.

I'd see if it meets your needs before spending any money.

Windows has a generic backup tool that I've had success using.
Start->Programs->Accessories->System Tools->Backup

It can select folder things to back up, can back up the whole PC if needed, works with most tape drives, and I've restored specific files as well as the entire PC with it as well.
Just be sure to make the boot disk that it tells you, then when you need to restore you can just slap the disk in, put in the 2003 CD, boot to the CD, tell it to read from the disk by pressing F6 I think, then it'll automagically start restoring with a few more key presses.

This is probably not what you're looking for, or in any way coherent, but that's how I work.

Just to follow the pattern above...

I use a tool called ntbackup.exe (snigger)...

but seriously, it is a great tool! We use it not only to back up the server, but also to back up the Exchange Server too! And the resulting file it creates we can access using a 3rd party app called Ontrack PowerControls which allows us to restore single messages form the Exchnage Information Store, as well as any file and complete PC, as suggested by the crunch-man above.

hth (three suggestions for the same thing... gotta mean its good!)
