Hello All,
we have been using Backup Exec 8.5 for years, but have now decided that we would like to backup directly to a file and ship it electronically to our backup hotsite. It is my understanding that 8.5 does not have this option and that we would need to upgrade, probably to 10d. I figure I should at least consider other options, can anyone give me some names of backup software I can research as potentially better than Backup Exec?

Thanks in advance...

Biggest other names would be CA Brightstor / Arcserve and EMC Legato.

or IBM's Tivoli Storage Manager - has support for server-to-server virtual volumes, enabling onsite backups to be shipped to a second TSM server down the wire ...

Kind Regards,

Netvault stinks. We have been using it in our environment for over 2 years now. The backup does not break down the size of the directories and files being backed up. We know how much space is being backed up to a tape, but again, there is no way to verify for example if you had a directoryA you will know it got backed up but you will not know the size. The only way around this was to purchase a "Disk Manager" product (which we have not done yet). My feeling is any backup product should allow you to have a break down of the directories and files.

I would recommend Veritas, or ArcServe (I don't know too much about Trivloi, but i'm sure it is better than Netvault).

You are definatly speaking out of inexperience. Even the products you mention do not do what you are stating.

I know exactly what I am talking about. I have had Netvault Workgroup (And now Netvault DataCenter) in my environment for the past couple years. What do you want to know? You call $2500 a year maintenance cheap? What experience do you have with this product? I'm speaking from experience. And yes, Veritas does do this. When a directory gets backed up you know how much data got backed up. The same with Arcserve
