We've got two Windows Server 2003 machines, one a DC, one a SQL Server, and they both have LTO3 drives. I'm looking for a backup solution to take care of a daily backup system for both machines, but that is straight forward enough to allow specific file restorations and on the fly backing up. We cater for about 100 users mainly, so we're not talking a large installation.

Do any of the members here have any backup software recommendations, based on their experience? Obviously simple, effective and inexpensive are the order of the day. Your help with this would be most appreciated.

SQL: Use SQL Management Studio to drop it to disk. Then back up the flat files.

Get Backup Exec current version onto the SQL Server. A remote agent licence on the DC, ignore the LTO3 on the DC. Run the BE to back up the SQL flat files and the AD system state.

The Backup Exec forum on TT has covered the SQL backup options many times.

Total cost: How much are you prepared to gamble with your data?
