I am soon going to be implementing a SuSE linux box to act as a file server for our company network. What is the best backup software to use for SuSE. It is going to be installed on a new Gateway server with an internal tape drive.
That is the solution that I am currently looking at too. Have you had good luck with it? I currently use Veritas on all of my Windows servers, does Veritas make a Linux product?
There are several. All the big players have linux agents / clients and linux servers. Veritas Netbackup, CA Arcserve, Legato Networker. There are also several smaller, but yet very good products like BRU, Arkeia, and I that I use BakBone Netvault.
So it depends on your budget, but I would definitely look at Arkeia and Bakbone.
We use Veritas at work, and it does have a Linux agent. If you have BackupExec or NetBackup on your Windows systems, you could use that. I don't know if they have a standalone Linux version.
I've used Tapeware for a standalone server with an attached tape drive, and it works quite well. I know that it can be used across servers, but haven't done that.
I am venturing into linux myself but have used this product for backup for year, it is great. I've used it on the SCO UNIX platform.
With its recovery disks (you create them), you can restore from tape, dvd/cd and have a full restore in a couple of hours (depending on size). If your media is bootable media, you have the option to create bootable backup, bit by bit comparision, email notification, prints results to printer, etc, etc, ...
As far as I am concerned, this backup program is second to none. Their support is great, very friendly staff.
Check them out, I am sure you'll find them to be worth your time.
Good luck!

Veritas' agent works pretty well. Restoring is quirky since it needs a lot of high ports open for that part. If your servers are separated by firewalls, that's something to consider. I have redundant servers, so I can restore to a staging server and move the files to production from there.
Veritas Backup Exec is a windows only server, low cost solution, compared to Veritas Netbackup. There is a linux agent that works quite well, unless you are using extended acls. If so, I don't know of any of the backup packages that will understand extended acls.
I know with Bakbone Netvault you can download a fully functioning 45 day demo and see if that meets your needs.
If you have a SANs environment, you can use 'tar' utility to back up your files once the SANs drive is mounted. You can simply backup your SANs drive when you feel like it. You will also have a 'recovery' process in place as well. If you want, I can send you tar backup script that I'm currently using.
Hello
If you have a budge for this project. I will use a combination of Veritas Agent and Acronis for Linux, I have been using this software and it's excellent it takes snapshots of you system while running and can make full or incremental backups as well...
