Backup/Restore of Indexes

On a full offline backup of a database, are the index data backed up or just their definitions? What I am tring to figure out is if the restore rebuilds the indexes from the backup or just loads the index data.... Also, if over 1/2 our used space is indexes in the database, how large can the database be before I have to worry about spanning tapes...
