backup / restore exchange

I am transitioning out of a SBS 03 setup. I have moved all of the domain (transfered roles) as well as everything else I can think of (except exchange). Now I would like to demote the old SBS box and reinstall it with a fresh OS and install Exchange on it. Can I do a backup of exchange....wipe the system, reinstall the os and exchange, then restore the exchange database? What problems could I potentially face? Thanks!

Not easily as you'd need to have the same org, site and server name - would be pretty complex and not guaranteed.

Can't you put a new Exchange server online and migrate to that then remove SBS?

Oh and if you've transferred the FSMO roles your SBS is going to shut itself down soon - SBS has to have the FSMO roles (except GC) or it timebombs and shuts down. This is by design.

I already did the transition pack, so I am technically not in an SBS environment anymore. Also, after i got done with the reinstall of the server, it will be named the same as now and be part of the same domain. My goal is to get the OS reinstalled to a clean install and get all all of the old SBS junk off of it.

I hav enever backed up and restored an exchange store before. Can I backup the store....reinstall the os and exchange, then restore the store? The server name and domain will be the same.

In theory, yes. You'd do yourself a world of good, though, by reading the disaster recovery whitepaper, which will explain things in much more detail.
