Hi guys,

Here's the scenario:

I'm trying to backup data on an NT 4.0 Box with Veritas 9.0 build 4454. I'm using the AFO and also trying to backup mailboxes remotely from another server (NT 4.0 also, Exchange 5.5). My tape device is a 110T DLT VS 80, have DLT IV 40/80 GB Tapes, and trying to backup 36 GB.

The problem:

Everytime Veritas start to backup data, it backups from 0 to 40 MB and then I hear the noise it makes when it is resetted. After that, it gets stuck, I cancel the job and it hangs until I stop services and restart them, or it just keeps stuck until I restart the server. I had this problem before with previous build of Veritas, so I tried first uninstalling all, reinstalling Veritas and then upgrading. After that, the vsp (volume snapshot provider) doesn't start at boot (I get an error of a driver not loaded when I restart the box) and last time, even the tape drivers seemed to get unload when the backup job got stuck. I verified the tapes with the Dell Library & Tape tools, the tape device was ok, but the tape I'm making tests on, didn't pass the read test. So, I ran the write/read test, and it went ok. It seems to me that Veritas is writing or sending wrong information to the tape device, so that it corrupts the tapes. Please help!

Have you tried running ntbackup to verify that this really is a software issue, and not a hardware issue? Just run a manual backup of a couple hundred mb. See if it finishes with no problems. I don't believe the software can corrupt the tapes.

Well, in fact the Dell Library & Tape Tools actually writes 150 MB to the tape in the Write/Read test. I haven't tried NT Backup, but I think it's going to be ok... I'm really confused about what's going on.

Ah! After I ran the test, I used BE again, and it didn't recognise the tape... I had to label it again. Any ideas?? I will try NT Backup, but I don't think it's a hardware problem, since Dell Library & TT doesn't hang with the same tape...

I agree tape sounds good. When you installed, what option did you choose for drivers? Did you specify the device & driver, or did you choose the option for backup exec drivers?

Oh oh... I think I selected BE drivers... (in the add/remove program menu appears a "Device drivers for removable storage") I have to uninstall them, right?

Another question: Do you think it's better to:

1. Just uninstall the drivers.

2. Uninstall all and reinstall BE again and NOT upgrade to build 4454.

3. Uninstall all and reinstall BE again and upgrade to build 4454.

And other question:

After I reinstalled BE, a device driver is not loading at start up. It is the VSP (Volume snapshot provider). How do I fix this? Is this part of BE or it belongs to NT?? Is it critical not to be running it??

In most cases, its fine the way you have it. You loaded the drivers for the device, but you allowed BE to use its own drivers.

I'd uninstall the software completely (copy any data off the server first), reinstall it, don't upgrade, and let it run that way.

The volume snapshot provider is a part of BE, if you do a clean install, and its still there, post the error, or go to veritas.com, and search for it in the BE pages.

Thank you mattjurado. You have answered what I asked on another thread and had no response, and also what I posted on another forum without response either. I think this thread can be very useful, since I read many threads in this forum with troubles like mine. I'll do what you suggest and if I have trouble, well, see you soon!.
