Hello everyone;
need some advice on the use of the backup operators group;
I have 4 servers that I backup every night. I use Veritas and various remote agents, all works well.
However in order for it to work I have to use a full blown domain admin account as the login for all the servers as the credentials.
I have tried using a user account assigned to the backup operators group but it always fails with the login.
I understood that a user that was a member of the backup operators group was by default able to 'bypass' security protocols to perform backups on remote machines.
using GPO I have enabled the backup operators group 'remote access to this machine', ( this machine being each server ).
I've missed something probably pretty basic, anyone got any pointers?
Many thanks

I don't know if only adding a user to the domain\backup operators group works by itself, you may need to add the domain group to a local server backup operators on the servers you are backing up also.

Update;
after messing around on each of the servers i am indeed able to successfully logon for backup purposes except for SQL databases.
Each time I select a SQL when creating a new job it keeps asking me for my credentials. Selecting the same one as used for the rest of the backup job fails.
If however I add the backup operator to the admin group it works.
so it is obviously a permissions issue, but surely I shoulldn't have to use a domain admin account?

Your SQL backup is failing because only administrators and sa account are setup as administrators for the SQL Server environment. You may want talk to your DBA about allowing the backup operators group to be allowed to perform backup tasks

DBA - Data Base Admin?
that being the case, which makes perfect sense, I'll have a look tomorrow.
cheers
